Built in 1964, by Father Patrick O'Reilly with the participation of the Singer-Polignac Foundation, the Gauguin museum is situated close to Mataiea on the west coast of Tahiti Nui. It was here that famoius artist lived during his first stay in Polynesia in 1891. The museum was presented to the Territory of French Polynesia in 1965. Entirely given over to the life and works of the artist, the museum has a collection of about 350 of his paintings and sketches.
